Three Unique Trends In Bonus Room Design

Frank Lloyd Wright once noted, “The architect should strive continually to simplify; the ensemble of the rooms should then be carefully considered that comfort and utility may go hand in hand with beauty.” While we wholeheartedly agree with this sentiment, today’s design, comfort and utility – particularly in bonus rooms – has been elevated to a whole new level!

To explore this further, we bring you three of the most unique trends in bonus rooms today.

    Contemporary Bedroom Suite:

A new twist on the bedroom, some homeowners are turning the bonus area into a guest suite, complete with a bed and sitting/television area. It’s the perfect room for out of town guests, or a great way to create a mother-in-law suite in a pinch.

    Café to Bar:

If you’re a homeowner who entertains, this idea might pertain to you. Some inventive homeowners have been converting the room above the garage (typically used as a bonus room) into a mini café during the day and a watering hole in the evening. Adding long bars, with espresso machines, and a few tables and chairs for seating areas, and this formerly wide open space quickly becomes multi-functional.

Many bonus rooms are built with walls at slanted angles crawling up the ceiling. One great way to utilize this space is to have built-ins added. Built-in shelving and storage allows this playroom or, perhaps, theatre room, to open up. Store toys, books, gadgets, and more in the new customized built-ins and create a clutter-less space.

There are so many great ways to convert a bonus room into a comfortable and functional space. Have you done something new and inventive with your rooms? We’d love to hear about it!
