The food scene in Nashville is, well, killer. And let’s just say that Melrose & Berry Hill are no exception to this. You can pretty much be in the mood for any kind of cuisine and these neighborhoods will be able to deliver. Whether you are looking for something casual or upscale, you can find it all in Melrose & Berry Hill. Here are some of the places that we think you need to check out:
The Sutler
This is one of our favorite spots to visit for brunch. And happy hour. And dinner. In other words, it’s just one of our favorite spots. With a bluegrass feel, this spot delivers on all fronts. They have great music, unique food, and some good cocktails. Need more reason to go? Check out the history of this place.
“The historic Sutler was originally opened in 1976 by country radio personality Johnny Potts. Part venue, part restaurant, and part dive bar, the Sutler was a social hub for locals and the Nashville music community, as well as a waypoint for travelers and touring acts from far and wide. The Sutler played host to countless musicians, artists, and acts in its lifetime, including Willie Nelson, Townes Van Zandt, Garth Brooks, Steve Earle, Don Everly, Buzz Cason, Emmylou Harris and Johnny Cash. The Sutler’s original location opened in the same historic Melrose theater building where it stands today.” – The Sutler
Vui’s Kitchen
If you are looking for some traditional Vietnamese food, this is where you should head. Tucked into a bungalow in Berry Hill, this restaurant has a great little patio for enjoying lunch or dinner. On the menu you’ll find things like traditional Pho Noodle Soup and Banh Mi Sandwiches. Better than that? They don’t fry anything, they use fresh herbs, only whole food ingredients, and they don’t use MSG in their food. You should definitely check out the menu here!
Mangia Nashville
Good Italian food can be hard to come by, but Mangia Nashville has it down. Mangia started as a pop-up dinner and then opened their physical building in the Melrose area in the spring of 2016. The restaurant features authentic New York Style Italian food with a family style experience. Their weekend Italian feast is to die for and we have proof of that with their menu right here. Be sure to make reservations if you want to enjoy this feast!
Calypso Cafe
Calypso Cafe is sure to be on the list of many local’s favorites list. This little cafe features healthy, fresh Cuban fusion cuisine. They include all of their nutritional information on their website with tips on how to order better. Calypso is the perfect spot for a quick lunch with colleagues. One of our favorite menu items is the Black Bean Salad. Quick, light, and healthy!
Sinema
Are you looking for something more upscale? This award-winning restaurant has an interior that will blow you away and the menu offerings are sure to as well. Located in the old Melrose theater this restaurant includes a rich history with a contemporary take on traditional American cuisine. You’ll find menu items like scallops with black garlic brown butter and truffle flatbread. The presentation of these menu items are beautiful and are best enjoyed with one of their signature cocktails. You can take a virtual tour of the whole place by visiting their site here.
Athens
You may be familiar with this restaurant because of its debut on Food Network’s Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives with Guy Fieri. This little Greek restaurant takes you to Greece for just a little bit. With a friendly waitstaff and traditional Greek food, you’ll feel like you are part of the family. They have a great breakfast menu for weekend mornings when you’re moving slow! Check out what they have to offer by hopping over to their website.
The Yellow Porch
Another favorite of many locals around town, this spot is more upscale and it is perfect for date night. When you arrive, you’ll find a vegetable garden in front of the restaurant. And that means exactly what you think it would, fresh menu offerings. The interior is cozy and intimate. The Yellow Porch has been a staple since it opened in 1998. Independently owned and operated, they offer a fresh twist on upscale dining in the area. You’ll find killer menu items like duck breast, lamb chops, and salmon on their menu. 8th and Roast
Coffee lovers, you have to check this shop out! Located on 8th Avenue in Melrose, this coffee shop is cozy and they have some great offerings when it comes to coffee. Our personal favorite? Their Vanilla Latte. If you want to learn a bit more about their process, you can check that out here. 8th and Roast is a great place to grab a coffee on the go, but you can also pick up a wrap or sandwich if you need to get lunch on the go!
Baja Burrito
We love Baja Burrito for many reasons. Number one, their food always delivers. Fresh and quick. It’s great for taking the kids and enjoying an evening on their patio. Number two, their staff is always friendly and efficient! They move through that line with speed. We love their pineapple salsa at the salsa bar. This burrito shop is independently owned and operated, doing things a little differently. They are a great option if you are looking for affordable catering for a little fiesta! Check it out here.
Gordon’s
Gordon’s is new to the area, but you wouldn’t know it. Walk into this restaurant more than once and you are sure to see some of their regulars. Nashville is known for their hot chicken and Gordon’s delivers when it comes to the hot chicken scene here in town! They opened in October of 2016 and have become a favorite spot for people in the neighborhood. The outside seating area features perfect, stringed lights for a laid-back feel.
