How to know when it’s time for a bigger house?

There is a reason the phrase “starter home” was invented. It was coined to represent the first home, the house you move into when you are single, or newly married, and rarely have to compete for space. It’s a start, but not the end home – the dream house.

Starter homes are fantastic, don’t get us wrong, but if you find that you’re three-people deep in a room after having kids, adopting a dog, a cat, three turtles and an iguana named Mr. Sparkles, it’s probably time for you to upgrade to a bigger house.

Other signs it’s time to consider a bigger house are:

  • You’ve come into an inheritance or gotten a job promotion.
  • The upgrades on your older home are pricey, consistent, and there’s no end in sight.
  • Your neighborhood has gone downhill.

When in doubt, we like to follow this trusty rule of thumb for when to move into a bigger home: move when your quality of life is suffering. Your home should provide breathing room, and enough legroom for your family to grow. If you’re ready to look for a bigger house, we’d love to help!
